Our Story

Following on from Paul Hanmer's successful piece “Top Drawer”. Philip Cox invited Paul to consider writing a substantial piece for Orchestra. The idea was a hit and Paul went all in to set a text for Choir, Soloists and Orchestra. It seemed to  make sense to write a companion piece to share similar forces with the Faure Requiem. Another reflective piece, often performed in sympathetic venues.

The composition of “ Mass for the First Peoples” has been an extraordinary project to be part of. We hope, moving the creation and performance of music in a different direction. In the past a composer would seek funding and then outsource the promotion, preparation and playing of the piece to others.

We have decided not to pass on these responsibilities to others, but take responsibility ourselves for the future of the piece. Like all people involved in the arts, we have a need to create, perform and bring to life music from the past and the present. It's our journey and we'd love to have you along for the ride.

There are considerable funding demands for the creation and performance of a new piece. We do need your support. There are a few ways to support this concert. Buy a ticket and come and enjoy the production. Book through the Intenational Mozart Festival site or Computicket.

Donations are very welcome and go a long way to funding productions like ours. Every contribution helps and your financial support is most appreciated. We are happy to acknowledge funders through our marketing efforts and concert publicity. Or you may prefer to make a donation anonymously.

Together with Philip Cox, a soloist in the concert, and the composer, Paul Hanmer. We have set up a registered company called "The First Peoples Company". Our purpose - to promote performances of the piece throughout the country and abroad. We plan to incorporate pieces by other South African Composers as we grow.
